SUSSEX 70s FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

The Sussex 70s team travelled to the Dome in Hounslow to renew our rivalry with the Middlesex players. After a cup of tea and catch up chat with the opposition, we started the match in earnest.

L-R Wendy, Laurence, Tim, Pam, Vera, Mike

Vera Groves & Wendy Arscott got off to a great start winning their ladies in 2 sets, whilst Mike Stoneman & Tim Kaye also won in 3 sets. Then Vera and Pam Barden continued the trend of winning in 2, followed by the final ladies Wendy & Pam completing a hattrick of wins in 2 for the ladies! Unfortunately, Tim & Laurence Walker, then Mike & Laurence lost their remaining men’s doubles bringing the score to Sussex 4, Middlesex 1.

L-R: Wendy, Pam, Vera

With all to play for in the Mixed doubles, Tim & Wendy put up a tough fight in 3 sets after narrowly losing the 2nd game 23-25 to win their rubber. With only 1 rubber needed to win the match, Mike & Vera were pleased to seal victory in 2, followed by Pam & Laurence fighting hard to win in 3, adding another valuable point to Sussex’s final score of Sussex 6, Middlesex 3.

The ladies enjoyed their tally of winning 5 out of 6 rubbers and couldn’t resist teasing the men. However, it was a great team effort with everyone playing their part for a very welcome ‘WIN’. Having ‘youngster’ Pam just coming into the 70s was a great asset to the team. Well played everyone.
