SUSSEX JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019

It’s always great to see young talent emerging at the Junior Championships and the event that took place over the weekend of 21stand 22ndSeptember was no exception. The first day saw the Under 12’s and U14’s demonstrate their skills with some fiercely determined competition.

The U12 boys’ singles was won by Scott Hollingworth who also won the U12 boys’ doubles with partner Leonardo St Louis. The U12 girls’ singles champion was Ines Dobson who also took the U12 girls’ doubles title with partner Anniika Trygstad-Fleury.

The U14 boys’ winner was Arjun Kolani, whilst the girls’ champion was Kathryn Ticehurst. In the U14 doubles events, Ryan Colcombe and Daniel Hitchcock won the boys’ and Amelia Roberts with Alice Fletcher won the girls’. The U14 mixed champions were Ryan Colcombe with partner Meili Nightingale.

We kicked off again on Sunday with the Under 16’s and Under 18’s. Stars of the show were Scott Haysom who won all three U18 events, that’s boys’ singles, boys’ doubles and mixed, and Andrew Harrison who matched this performance at U16 level. Scott was partnered by Stephen Boxall in the boys’ doubles and Nicole Wood in the mixed. Andrew was partnered by Rowan Goff in the boys’ doubles and Paige Gwynn in the mixed.

It was a privilege to witness some outstanding matches by Dewi Rice and Jerome Brackley, both U14 but playing up at U16. Dewi narrowly beat Jerome in an exciting and closely competitive quarter final of the boys’ singles. The pair finished runners up in the boys’ doubles, and Jerome took bronze with Mina Myall in the mixed. The future looks bright!
