Sad News – Mary Eddy Masters News by Jonny - 25th November 201925th November 20190 Sussex County Badminton Association were sad to learn that Mary Eddy (nee Bridge aged 73) passed away peacefully at her home in Birmingham with her husband and family on Saturday 16/11/2019 after a short illness. A National Junior Champion in 1964 with Lynn Veasey, Mary represented Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire first teams all with distinction. She was a County Badminton, Tennis and Squash player and will be sadly missed by her husband David (a former All England Champion), their three children John, Robert and Amy and their two grandchildren Mimi and Rudy. A cremation will be held at Robin Hood Cemetery and Crematorium, Streetsbrook Road, Shirley, Solihull, B90 3NL at 1.30pm on Monday December 2nd 2019. This will be followed by a wake at

SUSSEX 70s FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON Masters Reports by Jonny - 5th November 20195th November 20190 The Sussex 70s team travelled to the Dome in Hounslow to renew our rivalry with the Middlesex players. After a cup of tea and catch up chat with the opposition, we started the match in earnest. L-R Wendy, Laurence, Tim, Pam, Vera, Mike Vera Groves & Wendy Arscott got off to a great start winning their ladies in 2 sets, whilst Mike Stoneman & Tim Kaye also won in 3 sets. Then Vera and Pam Barden continued the trend of winning in 2, followed by the final ladies Wendy & Pam completing a hattrick of wins in 2 for the ladies! Unfortunately, Tim & Laurence Walker, then Mike & Laurence lost their remaining men's doubles bringing the score to Sussex 4, Middlesex
THREE GOLDS AND A SILVER AT THE KENT MASTERS Masters News Masters Reports by Jonny - 30th October 201930th October 20190 The first major tournament of the season saw our Sussex players continue to win medals. The Kent tournament is at the highest Gold level and attracted a lot of overseas players, particularly from The Netherlands. Over 40s Mens Doubles Chris Spice (Sussex) & partner Kenton Jones (Kent) won their group beating the No. 1 seeds on the way, whilst Phil Troke (Sussex) & his partner Paul Freeman (Kent) won their group beating the No. 2 seeds. This meant an all Sussex/Kent final pairing against each other. After a hard 3 set battle, Phil Troke & Paul Freeman beat Chris Spice & Kenton Jones, bringing both gold and silver medals home to Sussex (& of course Kent) Over 50s Mixed doubles The established pairing of
065s HAVE A SMASHING START AGAINST ESSEX Masters Reports by Jonny - 15th October 201928th October 20190 First match of the season with new regular players in the team. A phone call from the opposition (again) meant they were arriving late and the courts were booked solidly after our match so we were unsure whether we would get all the games played. As it was, a mixed pair arrived in time to get the third mixed out of the away before the rest of their team arrived. We continued in the normal format of even doubles but lost the first played mix game in two ends. James and I managed to take our first men’s in two straight, balancing the score line. Unfortunately we clashed mid court and lost a racket apiece. ££ouch!!! Unfortunately,
RECOGNISING COMMITMENT TO SUSSEX! Seniors News by Jonny - 29th September 201914th October 20190 The county are once again recognising commitment to Sussex badminton and were delighted to welcome Karen Chapman to present the awards. Karen badminton CV is one to be admired... Represented the county 73 times National doubles champion in 1980 Won gold in doubles at the European individual event in 1984 Won two golds in the 1982 Common wealth games (Team and individual mixed) and also a bronze in the ladies doubles at the same event. In 1983 she won a bronze in the mixed doubles world championships in Copenhagon ...and 37 full senior caps for England. Not bad huh?! SUSSEX JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019 Juniors News by Jonny - 26th September 201926th September 20190 It’s always great to see young talent emerging at the Junior Championships and the event that took place over the weekend of 21stand 22ndSeptember was no exception. The first day saw the Under 12’s and U14’s demonstrate their skills with some fiercely determined competition. The U12 boys’ singles was won by Scott Hollingworth who also won the U12 boys’ doubles with partner Leonardo St Louis. The U12 girls’ singles champion was Ines Dobson who also took the U12 girls’ doubles title with partner Anniika Trygstad-Fleury. The U14 boys’ winner was Arjun Kolani, whilst the girls’ champion was Kathryn Ticehurst. In the U14 doubles events, Ryan Colcombe and Daniel Hitchcock won the boys’ and Amelia Roberts with Alice Fletcher won the girls’. The

U12 and U14 girls singles arrive by 10:15 to start at 10:30 U12 and U14 Doubles will start approximately 13:00 depending on the conclusion of all singles events Sunday 22nd September U16 and U18 boys singles arrive by 09:00 to start at 09:15. U16 and U18 girls singles arrive by 10:30 to start at 10:45 U16 and U18 Doubles will start no earlier than 13:00 and will be dependant upon the conclusion of all singles events. Cathy Bargh reached the semi finals in the 55s singles, winning a bronze medal - congratulations Cathy ! Also, Vera Groves & Wendy Arscott reached the quarter finals in the 70s ladies doubles together and Sue Awcock reached the 70s quarter finals too with her partner Jan Hewett from Worcestershire.
